LAKEWOOD, Colo.–On a bright Sunday in October, 144 racers once again hit the single track to compete in the third Colorado High School Cycling League race at Bear Creek Lake Park. Twenty (20) teams were represented from all over Colorado as well as Laramie, Wyoming.

Bear Creek Lake offered a beautiful sweeping single track course with approximately 400 feet of climbing in the 4.5-mile lap. The course was full of short climbs, rolling hills and exciting descents. Coyote Crossing hosted the staging for the start/finish with spectators lining the barriers for a chance to cheer the racers. Dominique Fenichell of Boulder High School described the course as "short and fast". She couldn't contain her smile after taking second place and keeping her leader's jersey in the JV girls category.

Lindsay Dye, an Independent rider from Broomfield, took first place beating out friend Ellie Atkins, Boulder High, with a time of 1:26 for her 4 laps. Although Lindsay attended homecoming the night before she was full of energy and commented, "It was so brutal, I just barely beat Ellie, she pushed me so hard, she is so good." The Varsity girls received compliments from pro-racer Heather Irmiger (Trek/Subaru Team), who rode as the sweeper in support of these young racers.

Skyler Trujillo (Ft. Collins Composite) and Michael Vigers (Boulder High School) once again battled it out in the Varsity boys race. Skyler maintained his leader's jersey and managed to put more than a minute lead on Michael. They were closely followed by Zane Godby of Monarch MTB and Garrett Lundberg of Salida BV.

Heidi Kloser, Vail Valley Composite was cheered by her brother Christian and parents. Christian the current Leader for JV boys persuaded Heidi to attend this race. Their dad, Mike Kloser, commented, "It’s fun to watch them out front. I'm proud after all of these years to have passed on a little wisdom. It’s their choice to race though, we give them the opportunities and let them choose."

Heidi races for Vail Valley Composite. She finished five minutes in front of Dominique Fenichell in her first League race. Rachel Cutler wasn't far behind. Chatting with friend Dominique post race, Rachel Cutler exclaimed, "I'm having a great time! The riding was fun and this Jamba Juice is the best." Given the hot fall day, the smoothies soon sold out to the chagrin of the boys who raced later in the day.

Keeping it in the family, Christian Kloser of Vail Valley Composite topped the boys JV race. Minutes before staging, Christian gratefully received some much needed tech support from the pros with SRAM at the on-site Neutral Support. Christian came in ahead of Stephan Davoust of Animas HS and Joe Christiansen of Lyons HS. They competed against 43 other JV boys for their places, an impressive crowd for youth racing.

Sage Kitson of Salida HS took her second consecutive Frosh/Soph win. This is a competitive field with all the girls finishing within 15 minutes of one another. The Salida team beat the Fort Collins squad by one point to win a 3rd place team trophy. The Boulder High team continues to dominate by winning three consecutive 1st place team trophies. Vail Valley Composite took the silver team trophy.

Matt Wood (Boulder HS) made a strong showing, finishing his 3 laps in slightly over one hour. His parents Trish and Lee are at every race cheering him on and taking pictures. When asked about the day Matt stated, "It was great, it was the hardest finish so far with the hill at the end". This was his 3rd mountain bike race to date and he said, "I didn't even know I liked mountain biking".

The race was packed with spectators and Colorado League Director Kate Rau, reported, “This was a special event because many of our sponsors volunteered during the race weekend. Staff from SRAM, Primal, Wheat Ridge Cyclery, and Yeti witnessed first hand the program they've helped build.“

The camaraderie, enthusiasm and appreciation are evident among all the high school teams at every race. The entire 7220 Composite Team from Laramie gathered at the finish to cheer teammate Jordan Runner as he completed his first mountain bike race. They were very proud to don their new bright orange jerseys.
Be sure to catch the State Championships at Peaceful Valley in Elbert, Colorado on October 31st.

Skyler Trujillo Wins The First Ever Varsity High School Mountain Bike Race

From our friends at Mountain Flyer

http://www.mountainflyermagazine.com/

Sept 19, 2010) NATHROP, Colo—It was a special day in the history of Colorado mountain biking which saw the first ever high school cycling league mountain bike race take place at the Chalk Creek Ranch in perfect weather.

Designed for success, the race series is comprised of four races taking place during the fall semester, and features individual fields for boys and girl’s varsity, junior varsity, sophomore, and freshman racers.  There’s also an overall team competition which requires both boys and girls to participate in, and already has six high schools competing for the overall series.  Additionally, teens can race as independents if there are no team opportunities at their school, and smaller schools can pool their resources to race together as a composite team.

Executive Director of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, Matt Fritzinger was in attendance to help kick-off the third cycling league in the United States, and was very impressed with the turnout that far exceeded the expected one hundred.  “It feels like an established league already with the help of all the parents, volunteers, coaches, and schools.  With this kind of support we just can’t go wrong” noted Fritzinger.

Starting at 10am, the Varsity girls took off for 3 laps on a real-deal cross country mountain bike race course that was shortened from the same course used during the second Mountain States Cup race which attracted top US professional mountain bikers from around the country.  Each lap was approximately 6.3 miles and featured 500 feet of climbing.   It was Boulder High School girls Ellie Atkins who took the varsity win and Kelsey Phinney taking the junior varsity wins.  The sophomore/freshman girl’s race was combined together and won by independent racer Laurel Rathbun.

Dry weather lent to sandy and dusty conditions, but there was no shortage of good singletrack for racers to test their skills on.  “I was surprised by the quality of the course and the amount of singletrack.  Everything about this race from the competition, to the course, and especially getting kids on bikes is awesome” complimented stand-out professional mountain biker Dave Wiens who was in attendance to support the Gunnison high school team, and also lead the boys races out for a neutral start.

Emails arrive every day from folks interested in starting or helping with teams, parents and students looking for local teams, and supporters wanting to volunteer at races. I can hardly wait for September 19th to experience the buzz in the Pit Zone at Keith Darner’s ranch."

Prior to the race series are several one-day skills training camps, led by the acclaimed mountain bike coach Lee McCormack. These camps prepare both coaches and riders for a safe and fun season of riding. Registration for these, too, is at www.coloradomtb.org.
