An email from Stuarts Sis
Stuarts sister Holly asked me to pass this on.
"Greetings all-

Holly Schmaling here.  I am Stuart’s younger sister from the Chicago area.  I want to thank you all for your WONDERFUL support in this horrible situation.

The gift cards are a fabulous idea and will be well appreciated.  Stuart’s niece, Katie Culp (brother John’s daughter), who is a 23-year-old college student who lives in Atlanta, has taken a semester off and has moved into Stu and Jeri’s home to take care of her kids and the household full-time, and the cards will do much to simplify this job for her as she gets her bearings.  It will also help her to learn the area better!

To clarify your latest post, I was with Stuart on Saturday, and yes he is speaking, but it is nonsensical for the most part and his attention is fleeting, at best.  He is making appropriate associations with objects and their function, such as putting a toothbrush in his mouth, and saying “date” when looking at a calendar, but a direct question does not often yield an appropriate answer except for a nod of assent if asked “does this hurt?”, for example.  I want to clarify this mainly as now that the family is allowing limited visits (and please let them know you’re coming to make sure the timing is good, etc.), I don’t want people expecting more than is realistic.  His friend Randy Ross visited Sunday and does believe that Stuart recognized him.  I think as his awareness increases, these visits will become even more important.

Again, thank you so much for all your support.  It speaks volumes of the biking community, and I know if the bike shoe were on the other foot (and I hope it never is) that Stuart would do the same for you.

Holly"
